Welcome to Knights of Columbus, St. Malachy Council #5128

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization with 1.7 million members. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people.

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGinvey, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislator on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity.

St. Malachy Council #5128 has been a big part of that as it serves St. Philip the Apostle Parish and the general community since 1940. Serving those in need through a wide range of programs, while providing a variety of social events and improvements to the parish, men of this council and women of the Ladies Auxiliary continue to develop in their faith commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ through select activities within this Knights of Columbus council.

So to truly see how this Council formed and or where it came from you have to take a look at the Churches that brought our Council together. St. John the Evangelist of Foster, OH. And St. Malachy of Morrow, OH.

Due to the lack of space and frequent flooding, the members of the two Churches were queried about the proposal to merge the two churches. That in turn created our current parish, St. Philip the Apostle. This merger not only brought great Christian families from two churches into one but it was also relief for the pastors at that time since both churches normally shared pastors and between the two where not easy.

St. Malachy sustained flooding in 1913, 1937, 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1963. The only documented flooding at St. John was the priest’s residence in 1913. Both churches where on the railroads so the priest typically traveled from church to church by means of a hand-cars.

Ohio became a state 1803. William Clement was building the Little Miami Railroad and laid out a new town in 1844. This town was named Morrow. Mr. Clement donated a section of land so that the Catholics might have their own church, (Mr. Clement was not Catholic). St. Malachy Church was erected in 1854. St. Malachy was the first Catholic Church in Warren County and consisted of approximately 40 families. St. John the Evangelist Church was built in 1883 and seated 96 people.

So with the merger of the two Churches as one in 1965, St. Philip the Apostle began providing mass as of August 1, 1965. The Knights of Columbus which was active in both churches became one, St. Malachy Council #5128. So from this merger of two Churches came one terrific K of C Council. These men provide spiritual fellowship and growth amongst brothers; help and support to our Catholic parish and community, as well with events that help us grow as a Catholic family both in our faith and in our personal lives.

While serving those in need through a wide range of programs, along with providing a variety of social events and improvements to the parish, men of this council and women of the Ladies Auxiliary continue to develop in their faith commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ through select activities within this Knights of Columbus council.
